Sidney Dekker

Professor at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, where he founded the Safety Science Innovation Lab

What can a professor in the field of physical safety teach us about office work? As it turns out, quite a lot.

Dr. Dekker is part of a handful of safety experts (that investigate plane crashes, train derailments, industrial spills, etc.) who asked the question of: instead of preventing bad things from happening, couldn't we instead insure good things happen more often? His branch of this field he calls "Safety Differently" and it's implications are huge. His approach is very human-centric and looks for ways to enable people within a system to make better choices that lead to better outcomes, rather than punish people for violating one of a laundry list of rules. In doing this, self-correcting systems are set up and enabled, which continually adapt as the environment changes.
